A world-renowned house reef at Oblu Helengeli, Maldives
There are so many wonderful resorts that you can choose to visit in the Maldives. Whether you want to stay in one location or do some island hopping during your visit, Oblu Helengeli Maldives is somewhere you simply must go when experiencing this beautiful country.
After a long-haul flight, Oblu Helengeli Maldives is just a boat ride away from Male, as opposed to a seaplane. This is appealing for those who don’t want to board another flight at this point in their journey and it is particularly good for children, who will be tired.
Oblu Helengeli Maldives has an excellent geographical position. It is situated between two channels. This means that the house reef is teaming with diverse marine life. With this in mind, Oblu Helengeli is best suited to those who are serious about snorkelling and diving.
Before you visit the Maldives, it is important to decide whether you would prefer a resort with expansive sandy beaches or excellent access to a vibrant house reef. If the latter is the reason that you are visiting the Maldives, then Oblu Helengeli is one of the best places to stay.

In addition to offering incredible underwater experiences for adults, it is also ideal for children who want to get their first glimpse of life under the sea.
The main section of the house reef is overseen by lifeguards. This offers additional reassurance when swimming in the sometimes-testing Indian Ocean, which can often present strong currents. There are also several buoyancy rings that are carefully positioned adjacent to the drop off to allow for resting spots. This is helpful for young swimmers and those who simply want to pace themselves when viewing the longest section of the house reef.

All of the equipment is provided at the island. However, we recommend travelling with your own snorkelling gear. You can get this fitted in stores such as Mike’s Dive Shop, near London. Specialist equipment reduces the chances of various issues interfering with your experience, for examples blisters occurring from flippers or a mask steaming up.
We also recommend taking a Scoob. This is an excellent addition and means that you have your own resting buoyancy aid looped around your body. It helps you have the option of taking a break whenever you wish and also means that you can be seen very easily by the lifeguards.

Oblu Helengeli Maldives has a world-renowned house reef and there are so many things to see. It is absolutely outstanding and far surpasses many other house reefs in the Maldives. You can reach the drop off very quickly from the beach via the designated access channels, or enjoy a stroll down the pier to dive directly onto the edge of the reef. You cannot circumnavigate the entire island because certain sections are not open for snorkelling. However, this is not necessary because there is so much to see on the sunset side of the island. It is possible to snorkel on the sunrise side, but many of the highlights are actually on the sunset side.
Oblu Helengeli is our chosen base for our Maldives Special coverage. The house reef provides fantastic opportunities to photograph an array of sea life, which you don’t always get to see when visiting this part of the world. Every day, without failure, turtles were spotted feeding on the house reef. This happened multiple times a day during our trip. The turtle population is abundant on this house reef. In December 2025, Oblu Helengeli released baby turtles onto their reef after their eggs hatched on the island. The turtles enjoy feeding off the coral at Helengeli. Not only can you enjoy watching them in their natural environment, but they are usually positioned at points that are easily accessible for children.

Seeing turtles so frequently is certainly a highlight of the island. However, you will also be able to spot octopus, squid, black tip reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, nurse sharks and different types of rays swimming alongside hundreds of tropical fish. We even witnessed a relatively rare mating experience with several sharks all gathered together.
Every time you venture down the sunset strip of the house reef, you will see something different. Due to the currents changing, sometimes there will be very small patches of poor visibility; however, these pass quickly and you must persist with swimming the entire length as it is a very special experience. Furthermore, at dawn and dusk, you are likely to see a large pod of dolphins swim past the island too. We saw baby black tip reef sharks frequently coming very close to the shore.
Back on the sand, you will find hundreds of hermit crabs, which are fascinating to watch. They usually come out of their shells towards the end of the day. The island’s resident heron flies gracefully through the foliage, alongside other tropical birds. Oblu Helengeli is quite simply a paradise for nature and nature-lovers.
Other parts of the resort are excellent as well. The Kids Club has an exciting selection of activities and runs throughout the day. Children can enjoy a treasure hunt, painting, mini-Olympics and mocktail classes, with the care complimentary throughout your stay. You can drop in and out of the Kids Club and it is a good idea to give children some respite from the heat in the middle of the day. Children can also enjoy the large pool, which is located near to the bar area, with many of the villas having a family focus and encompassing a private pool.

One of the noticeable updates to the resort seems to be the food and beverage. This is very good and has certainly improved at the island over the past year. Overseen by Bishnu Prasad, Oblu Helengeli has to cater for a vast number of nationalities and the buffet offering is therefore extensive. You can enjoy Indian dishes at the curry station every day, or opt for salads, Asian food, roast chicken, soups, Italian cuisine, catch of the day and much, much more. The chefs are happy to make anything you wish. The French sparkling rose wine is tasting very well and there is Lion beer on tap. There are also plenty of other beverage options available, such as Pommery champagne, with the delicious cocktail menu offering many of the usual favourites.
Dinner on the beach at Just Grill will be a highlight of any stay and this is worth booking as an extra. The a la carte meal includes Maldivian lobster, among the highlights. The setting is simply stunning, with the sand between your toes and the lapping of the Indian Ocean guaranteeing a perfect tropical atmosphere. Raga Route is another destination restaurant that is located on the island and this offers locally-inspired cuisine.

The team at Oblu Henelgeli also put a tremendous amount of effort into various celebration festivals. Whether it is the Christmas period, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day or Easter, the themed evenings are very well executed. The Valentine’s Dinner options include a stunningly romantic beach dinner, with live music, fresh roses and giant heart décor on the beach.
The staff at Oblu Helengeli Maldives are very friendly and helpful, which means that no matter what times of year you visit, they will do their best to ensure that you enjoy a wonderful stay on this precious island.
