Claridge’s unveil their stunning Christmas tree, designed by Dolce and Gabbana
Last night some of The Sloaney team popped into Claridge’s and we were greeted by their dazzling Christmas tree. This year it has been designed by long time guests and friends of the legendary hotel, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
The festive season has well and truly arrived at Claridge’s and the beautiful icy lights outside the hotel beckon you inside. The towering tree is seven metres high and stands at the base of the sweeping staircase. It mixes traditional decorations with Sicilian elements that draw on the Italian heritage and origins of the designers.
The tree is adorned with more than 450 glass baubles blown by master artisans from Verona and Lake of Como, which have been hand-painted with images of the sun, citrus groves, flowering almonds and prickly pears to recreate the idea of a Sicilian garden. A bespoke multi-coloured ‘luminarie’ framework, created in Southern Italy, surrounds the tree and references the traditional illuminations seen in Italian streets and Piazzas during Christmas time.
At the base of the tree are 30 hand crafted Sicilian marionettes (Pupi) made in the likeness of Charlemagne and other medieval knights, carved in wood and dressed in velvet robes.
The Claridge’s Christmas tree has long been a festive landmark and is one of the must see festive treats in London. This is the fourth year that the hotel has invited one of its favourite guests to create and decorate the Christmas tree. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have certainly shown off their unique and colourful style.
