There has been a universal longing by many in the fashion pack for the spotlight to move away from the skyscraper, stripper-style stilettos that have strutted down the catwalk in recent seasons.

The good news is that your feet can finally breathe a sign of relief and enjoy some respite from cripplingly high heels, as the time has come for the pointed pump to be moved to the fore of our wardrobes. Although they are typically lower than other styles, the aesthetic design lengthens your leg in a more subtle way and therefore provides you with a natural and ladylike boost in height.

The Duchess of Cambridge has championed this chic alterative for a while now and it seems that a number of A-listers, such as Cameron Diaz and Karolina Kurkova, are encouraging a change in footwear trends by following suit.

Several influential designers are presenting this sophisticated style of shoe in their Spring/Summer 2012 collections. Stella McCartney offers the patent Kapoor (£395), which is an asymmetric sling back and the style is available in both nude and black. This shoe epitomises elegance and the 110mm heel means that you won’t have to compromise too much on height.

If you like your footwear to make a statement, these bold leather pumps (£795) by Jimmy Choo feature a snake-effect pattern in a metallic purple. They are guaranteed to make style waves at a forthcoming cocktail party and will provide a playful finish to a simple outfit.

You can brighten up your day and give your wardrobe a serious injection of colour with the stunning Pigalle Pollock (£POA) from Christian Louboutin. These patent leather heels boast a striking multi-coloured pattern, which complements the designer’s signature red sole.
