Selfridges launch extensive new Wine Shop and the delightful Harry Gordon’s Bar
Last week, I attended the launch of the new Wine Shop and Harry Gordon’s Bar at Selfridges. The Wine Shop now takes up a large area on the lower ground floor and boasts over 200 new product lines, which makes it the largest wine and cigar shop ever opened by the premium store.
A smart champagne reception awaited guests and the delicious canapés were quickly consumed by those fighting off an early evening hunger pang. Once everyone had arrived, we were let loose in the new Wine Shop for a tasting journey. A selection of fine wine, spirits and diverse ales were ready for sampling.
Customers of Selfridges have the luxury of being able to pre-order any alcoholic beverage from around the world. A pinnacle of the current stock is the highly sought-after 2005 Petrus; a Château I was lucky enough to visit during a trip to Saint-Émilion last year. Retailing at £4,500 per bottle, this stunning vintage is the ultimate treat for wine connoisseurs. However, those looking for more modest luxury would be well advised to try some of the delightful home brands by Selfridges, especially the champagne, which retails just shy of £30.
All beverages showcased in the Wine Shop are also available for customers to drink, with just a six minute chill time (when required). The Harry Gordon’s Cocktail and Wine Bar provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the streets outside. The setting feels a million miles away from the usual department store bar and it is certainly worth sneaking away to this peaceful bolt hole after a busy shopping experience. A traditional feel has been created with the prevalence of wood and soft lighting fostering a sophisticated and almost rural appeal.
