Central & Co: The all-day brasserie with an edgy New York vibe
Central & Co is an all-day brasserie and bar that occupies the prime spot at the very top of Carnaby Street. I popped in for a bite to eat last week after a poke around some of the area’s fabulous shops.
This place radiates chic and cool class. The stripped back interior perfectly mixes a contemporary and edgy feel with an element of sophistication. It combines strong lines and bold colours with abstract lighting, shabby chic walls and impressive street-style art. The front of the venue has double aspect front doors that can be opened to create a sociable indoor-outdoor space, giving it a gorgeous New York vibe.
The back of the venue boasts a vast refrigerated wine wall housing one of the city’s most diverse ranges of sparkling wines, as well as a great selection of still wines, house beers and cocktails. Guests immediately know this food establishment takes its drinks very seriously!
The ambiance is fantastic, when I arrived it was bright, chic and cheerful but as the sun dipped it morphed into a sultry atmosphere that oozed ‘cool.’ Central & Co offers a mixed range of small plates, mains and puddings. We started with a few small plates and I quickly realised ‘small’ was a touch inaccurate as what I had meant as a starters left me nearly full before the mains!
However, I could still find space for more food after a short pause and I certainly couldn’t resist the delicious menu. The variety in selection provides a great showcase for their seasonal, locally-sourced produce. Highlights include Hot Smoked Salmon, Pollock and Chips and a traditional Beef Burger in a house-baked bun.
It was very much agreed upon that there is a complete lack of pretension of the menu. The food is solidly and unapologetically British with just a few concessions to American and European palates. Nothing needs translating or explaining and the quality is a perfect tribute to the excellently selected kitchen staff preparing your plate.
Service was, at all times, attentive, friendly and polished. It was understood there was no rush to the evening and we were there to enjoy the drinking and dining experience rather than to express a hurried meal. Importantly, every single member of staff seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves and determined to ensure that we should as well. We – and I am sure all guests felt the same – left with the sense that our visit had been greatly appreciated and this alone encouraged a return to the restaurant. Whether it’s for an after-work tipple or a leisurely meal, I certainly know I will be back at Central & Co soon.
