Editor’s Comment: The racing season kick starts a summer packed with exciting events
Can you believe that we are already in the middle of summer? The weather certainly tells a different story, but it has not stopped The Sloaney team from enjoying some early highlights of the summer events season.
The wind and rain failed to dampen the spirits at Royal Ascot and the atmosphere was jovial in the picnic area, as well as the Royal Enclosure. This year’s new dress code appeared a resounding success and was a gentle reminder to everyone that a day at the racing is an elegant occasion and the chance to bring out our best attire from the wardrobe.
A trip to Royal Ascot was followed by an impromptu visit to the Irish Derby, where some of the team watched Camelot gallop to a strong win in the feature race, despite difficult conditions. We enjoyed wonderful hospitality from the title sponsor Dubai Duty Free and in an unprecedented move, the Curragh scheduled the main race to take place at 7.40pm. This was well-received and offered a wonderful climax to the day’s entertainment. The Irish certainly know how to party and you are guaranteed plenty of ‘craic’ when visiting the Emerald Isle.
The racing season is now in full swing, with the Coral Eclipse taking place at Sandown this weekend and Glorious Goodwood featuring at the end of the month. However, for those with less of an interest in equine activities, our Fashion Editor, Chloe Coco Arnold, has previewed a broad range of summer events that may tickle your fancy (read here). If you are a fan of comedy, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a must and Cat Gray has given tips for the top acts to watch in August (read here). For art lovers, we attended the private viewing of ‘On the Move’ at the Gazelli Art House in Mayfair this month. The exhibition has some very impressive pieces and runs until mid-August.
Our Beauty Editor, Halle Carlson, has been wooed by the wonderful fragrances on offer by Mor Cosmetics (read more here). Meanwhile, I was lucky enough to experience a Nubo facial at the prestigious Bond Street department store, Fenwick. This skincare brand is truly wonderful. If you want to try products that really work and clearly fight anti-aging, the luxurious range deserves a spot in your bathroom cabinet (read about the facial here).
Halle recently ventured away from the beauty desk to enjoy a night at the lovely Ten Manchester Street hotel. A cocktail master class preceded her stay and the traditional 5* hotel proved chic and lavish (read more here).
Finally, last month we discovered a new gem for pre or post theatre drinks. Archer Street Cocktail Bar is a sophisticated venue located in Soho. All the waitresses are West End performers and provide spontaneous entertainment throughout the evening; you simply must pop by for a glass of bubbles (read more here).
Our team of writers will be busy bringing you a plethora of luxury features this month and I am looking forward to reporting from the technical rehearsal of the Olympic Opening Ceremony, as the world’s greatest sporting event arrives in London. On a slightly different note, I have also just purchased some beautiful bantam hens and a feature is scheduled for those interested in caring for these animals, either in the city or the countryside. Stay tuned to The Sloaney for more…
