The Sloaney recently attended a fabulous soiree that was hosted by John Lewis to mark their 150th year anniversary. John Lewis is one of our most successful retail stories and it was actually deemed the most trusted brand in the UK by the Reputation Institute only last week.

The triumph of John Lewis in such a competitive market is partly down to excellent customer service, those inspiring Christmas adverts and a vast choice of notable products that range from the latest fashions to diverse home essentials.

The 150th anniversary party was hosted by the Directors in a plush new roof garden at the flagship store on London’s Oxford Street. John Lewis has championed home-grown talent in the creation of the garden by selecting RHS Young Gardener of the Year, Tony Woods, as the designer.

The event began with customary games such as croquet and lawn tennis, while guests were surrounded by traditionally dressed characters from the early days of retail. Although the weather was not favourable, we embraced the occasion in true British spirit.

Managing Director Andy Street welcomed everyone with a speech that emphasised that John Lewis is a British brand that does not stand still. He proudly talked about leading the way in online shopping and the importance of maintaining a personal shopping experience, despite the modern landscape.

Various esteemed guests attended the occasion; we shared a lift to the roof garden with the Editor of British Vogue, Alexandra Shulman. Alice Temperley and Jasmine Guinness were among other big names from the fashion industry in attendance.

Mini bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne accompanied an impressive selection of canapés and the event concluded with a guided tour of an exhibition that charted the heritage of John Lewis. The brand and celebration left us all feeling very proud to be British.
